Jen Dyke Art Review

With just an edge of creepiness, Jen Dyke’s exhibit at Dayton’s 2018 Side Show, was delightful and thought-provoking.

Two side-by-side displays caught the attention of anyone who drew near. One, a series of superstitions personified, the other a skeleton asking the audience what they were afraid of. The skeleton incorporated some of superstitions of its own – a rabbit can be sighted on an end table, presumably with a lucky foot, and an umbrella open indoors.

It was the series next to it hanging from the wall that was truly a joy to pore over, though. Several of them in the style of a boxed diorama, there were tiny open ladders, pennies turned heads up, covered mirrors, and Friday the 13th circled on small calendar.

Each new piece made the viewer smile and nod in recognition as they realized what each display stood for.

The best kind of art is the kind that gets those mental gears turning, and Jen Dyke’s miniature scenes were masterpieces that did just that.
